The Deadline Approaches – Maine Playwrights Festival 2014

I’ve been working like the devil on my novel in progress tentatively named Transit of Venus and have let the December 15th deadline for submissions to the Maine Playwrights Festival creep up on me.

It’s taken all the effort and skill I have to try to transform my full length play into a novel. It’s much more work than I could ever have imagined. Why do I concern myself with writing plays at all?  I like plays.  Going to live theater productions is the main entertainment venue Jan and I attend. We go to the movies a fair amount and watch television incessantly.  But, I feel very much at home with plays.

In years past, I’ve submitted full length plays, and ten minute plays to Acorn, and have had some of them selected for production in the Festival.  It’s still a big thrill to see my work on stage there in the Spring. The format for the festival is different this year. Here’s how they describe it:

Acorn is honored to announce that The Maine Theater Fund has awarded a $2,500 grant to underwrite this year’s edition of the Maine Playwrights Festival, the state’s premiere incubator for developing new plays by local playwrights. These funds will be used to further assist selected MPF playwrights with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the craft by participating in an active revision process, which will include feedback from a well-established nationally known playwright, as well as a series of public staged readings to assist in script revisions before the final production. The 14th edition of the MPF is scheduled to take place at the St. Lawrence Arts Center from May 11 to 17, 2015.

Submissions are limited to plays running between 8 and 30 minutes. My submission this year will run something like eighteen minutes in length.

I find myself awake at three o’clock in the morning all this last week, thinking about the play.  But, this morning, I cut through to the writing, and I’m on my way to a submission to the Festival by Dec 15.

  1. Good luck with penning your play! Have any that have been performed been posted on YouTube? I really got into watching 10-minute plays when I started teaching a unit on writing plays.

  2. Hi Jeri – I’ve only had one play made into a video, and that was not a very good experience. I don’t know how to do it so that it truly relicates the live performance.
