On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft – A Review

Steven King

Steven King

Steven King writes in a smooth, easy to read, casual style that millions of readers love. Of course. The first section is truly a memoir of his early attempts to get published. A thousand rejections. So, even the masters don’t come out of the box perfect. It’s a familiar story, but still absorbing. Then, there’s the part on the craft. Zero adverbs. Go easy on the adjectives. Above all, tell the truth. Always go forward with the story, and find some way to blend in essential backstory lest you bore your readers and present them with a reason to close the book. The POV is of one of the most successful writers ever, confident and fearless. Don’t look for anything on self publishing. His method: conceive a situation, sit down and write every day, conceive another situation. Let the characters impart the story. Easy on description. Uh oh, spoilers here! But no fear, it’s the way he tells it that makes the book a great read for writers.
